About the Artwork:
Above Our Torments is a powerful visual invocation of survival, truth-telling, and transformation. The central figure rises above the forces that once bound her, embodying the collective resilience of communities that continue to resist systemic harm. Her ascent is not one of escape, but of reclamation—a refusal to be defined by torment.
Surrounding her are phoenixes, guardians of rebirth, carrying ancestral echoes of rising, returning, and re-membering. They represent the ongoing cycle of reclaiming narrative and power, illuminating the path from pain to possibility.
The mask obscuring the figure’s face transforms her into a shared symbol, rather than an individual identity. The red hues serve as a vessel for blood memory, generational pain, and communal suffering, reminding us that the story of torment—and the story of rising—belongs to many. This piece honors the people whose stories build movements for justice, insisting that to rise above torment is not to forget, but to confront it, name it, and choose freedom anyway.
